A Controlled Ankle Movement (CAM) Walker is a specially designed Orthosis to immobilize the foot and ankle following low limb fractures, ligament strains and other injuries. It’s often used as a substitute to plaster casting because it’s a more durable, hygienic and easily removable. The walker takes partial weight off the foot/ankle and a rocker sole to allow easier walking to providing better healing and improved mobility.
The benefits of a correctly clinically fitted and aligned CAM Walker are:
* May reduce the need for crutches, making it easier to walk and get back to work and daily living
* Can be taken off for washing and dressing changes – less skin problem and less smell!
* reduced pain as the walker offloads stress
* Our Cam walkers have air (Pneumatic) liners which are inflated to help further stabilize fractures and reduce swelling
*Closed toe and hard shell options are also available for those returning to work
WHY HAVE I BEEN PRESCRIBED A CAM WALKER?
CAM Walkers must be fitted by a specially trained practitioner such as your physio from Clifton Hill Physiotherapy.
Fractures: If you have a fracture of the foot or ankle, it will prevent movement and reduce stress applied to the fractured bone during healing by taking partial weight off the foot and ankle. Importantly the CAM walker allows some muscle movement which can speed up your rehabilitation.
Ligament & Soft tissue Injuries: For a severe ligament sprain or tear the CAM walker will stabilize your ankle to speed up heeling and promote stability.
If you require a CAM walker contact us now for an appointment for a specialized fitting with one of our physiotherapist.
